  1. Red Boxing With Whistles

  5. item only. It is not to be taken as an
  6. encouragement to make fraudulent
  7. telephone calls.

  9. Red boxing consists of simulating the
  10. tones produced when coins are deposited
  11. in a pay phone. Coin tones are beeps of
  12. 2200 Hz + 1700 Hz as follows:
  13.  
  14. 5 cents - 1 beep, 66 milliseconds
  15. duration.
  16.  
  17. 10 cents - 2 beeps, each 66
  18. milliseconds duration with 66
  19. millisecond pause between beeps.
  20.  
  21. 25 cents - 5 beeps, each 33
  22. milliseconds duration with a 33
  23. millisecond pause between beeps.

  25. Two methods have commonly been used by
  26. phone phreaks to produce these tones
  27. and make free calls.
  28.  
  29. 1. The traditional Red Box consisting
  30. of a pair of Wien-bridge oscillators
  31. with the timing controlled by 555 timer
  32. chips.

  34. 2. Producing the signals with a
  35. computer which are recorded and then
  36. played back into the mouth piece of a
  37. pay phone.
  38.  
  39. A third method has recently appeared
  40. which is a real mind blower. A phreak
  41. in the Midwest has extensively tested a
  42. method of red boxing which uses nothing
  43. more than a pair of brass or aluminum
  44. whistles. The whistles are 1/4 inch in
  45. diameter by 4 inches long and are tuned
  46. by means of a wooden dowel rod which
  47. fits snugly inside. The whistles can be
  48. brought precisely on frequency by
  49. tuning them against a known signal
  50. source such as a computer capable of
  51. producing the tones. Once tuned, the
  52. whistles are glued or taped together so
  53. they can be blown together to produce
  54. the dual tone used in coin signaling.
  55. It has been tested and proven that with
  56. a little practice these whistles can be
  57. used to make free calls. Now you can
  58. blow your money without spending a
  59. cent.
